AC Single Phase Induction Motor In Detail
With a single phase stator the magnetic field purely alternating so no rating magnetic field is set up. Any clockwise torque is opposed by an equal and opposite anti clockwise torque. Once the rotot moves it will accelerate in the direction started, but it will not self start.
With a split phase induction motor an auxiliay winding in series with a resistance carries a current in which the angle of lag is less than the angle of lag in the main winding.
The two windings thus produce a rotating magnetic field which makes the motor self starting...! and so on.
